Flugpassagiere sicherheitshalber abgehoert

Researchers are investigating the possibility of recording the conversations of air passengers to further protect against security risks.

Safety of Aircraft in Future European Environment (SAFEE), an integrated project designed to restore full confidence in the air transport industry, is working on technology that will employ microphones and cameras that are all linked to a central computer.

"They may appear nervous, or could be getting up while the plane is taxiing. If someone looks as if they are praying, the microphones would be able to tell if they were by picking up key words.

"Passengers are not being snooped on by humans, but by machines which will process the data, which would not be stored after the flight unless there is an incident," she added.

With the backing of Reading University, SAFEE exists to ensure "a full secure flight from departure to arrival destination whatever the identified threats". The project is based largely on the idea of an integrated information management system that is "underpinned by a secure communication system".
